MOTHER(HOOD) | EMMA LOVES PERTH

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to raise your family in another part of the world?  In our Love Where You Live  series we get a glimpse into the day to day lives of mamas from all over the world. Where they get coffee, have play dates, date night, shop... It's kind of like a travel guide for mamas. But more than that, it shows that even though we live in different climates and cultures, we can connect through the universal language of motherhood. xx

WHO | Emma Guthrie @lovewhereyoulive

LIVES | Perth, Australia

WORKS | Professionally, I’m a real estate agent for Nook Property; selling homes in the area of which we reside and LOVE “coastal Perth” Trigg/North Beach/Scarborough. For fun, I run my online social media blog “love.where.you.live” and in-between, being a mumma to my two cubs.

TRIBE | My huuursband of 7 years, Nick, and our two tribette’s Nash, our emotional and super loving first-born son (5.5 years) and Georgie, our fire-cracker, wild child daughter (3.5 years).

ROOTS |I grew up in Adelaide, South Australia in a gorgeous coastal area called Glenelg (common thread – we love the beach) and my husband was born in New Zealand. My family and I moved to Perth when I was a teenager; my parents and sister have since moved to Melbourne but falling in love with a curly haired, surfer boy, has kept me in WA.

COFFEE OR TEA | Liquid gold in the form of coffee is my daily “go to”; the kids already order for me “skinny latte thanks!”. I have the best café walking distance from my home, Yelo, where you can wander in with sand still on your feet, kids are more than welcome and dogs happily lounge around out the front. It’s the type of place you run into your neighbours, fellow school parents, friends, co-workers. A relaxed vibe, great tunes, awesome coffee and an uninhibited view of the ocean.

FAMILY DINNER | We have a couple of regular family dinner date haunts that we frequent – Ocean Dragon for amazing Asian style food, Pasta on The Terrace for home-made Italian food and Grill’d Burgers for a gourmet burger and fries hit.

DATE NIGHT |My hubby and I love a good Mexican feast. Our ultimate date night is gorging on a variety share style dishes at El Publico, drinking margarita’s and listening to the great tunes from the in-house DJ.

GIRLS NIGHT OUT | As long as there’s a dance floor (and let’s face it – 90’s music and you’ve got me hooked) I’m there! Taking in the laneway bars in the city and Northbridge is always a lot of fun.

(RETAIL) THERAPY | I love to support local businesses, so you’ll often find me at boutique fashion stores like Ginger Owl, Scarlett, Sara Fox And Co, Hyperluxe for on-trend active-wear and Hollow Surf for our surf-wear and accessories.

WORK OUT | I’m not a “gym” kind of girl… I’m definitely more a “coastie walk” and Reformer Pilates chick. The girls at Stoke Physio are the BEST for one-on-one Reformer Pilates training and have become great friends of mine. And as often as I can I take my puppy dog, Bachi, for a walk and swim at the beach.

PLAY DATES | Summer is beach, beach and more beach. We also love Charles Riley Reserve that has an awesome playground catering for all ages (there’s even an old-school flying fox). As a family, we also make our way into Kings Park on the edge overlooking our amazing city and riverfront, where they have a wonderful NatureScape exploring area, a “Dinosaur playground” (actually called Synergy Parkland) with huge dinosaur statues and awesome walking trails.

MUST-DOS | When visiting Perth you’ll need to spend a good week or two here to really take in the variety of experiences. If you’re near the city, there’s the newly opened Elizabeth Quay man-made marina with shopping and dining experiences to take in, it’s become the gateway to our city; visit Kings Park for a gorgeous view and explore, stay coastal during summer and experience the amazing beach-lifestyle and local surf breaks, spend a good few days “down south” in Dunsborough/Yallingup/Margaret River for lots of kid-friendly wineries and breweries, art galleries, amazing surf spots, boutique shopping and more, eat out in Mount Hawthorn, bar-hop through trendy Fremantle, take-in beautiful weatherboard restored homes in East Fremantle, enjoy morning tea on the riverfront of Matilda Bay, trawl the growing small bars popping up in Northbridge on the city skirts. And more….

Rottnest Island, just off the coast from the Perth CBD. That's where I go for a much needed 'girls weekend' with my besties. It's absolutely stunning, with lots of tanning on the beach & girly chats. The island has no cars, so transportation is via foot, bike or the island bus; there's a pub & a couple of cafe's, a General Store... The main attraction is the relaxed island life! Takes about 45 minutes via ferry to get there & it's utterly breathtaking.

ON A SUNDAY …

You will find us walking to the beach, hubby surfing, kids frolicking on the oceans edge, each of us taking in turns heading out snorkelling on our local reef and taking respite under the beach tent. Our lifestyle is very much coastal focussed and we LOVE IT!
