TRAVELLING WITH BABY? WE'VE GOT YOU COVERED WITH THE ULTIMATE PACKING CHECKLIST
BY MARCIA LEONE
It never ceases to amaze me just how much stuff you need to travel with a baby! Here's a checklist of items that make traveling much easier, plus 5 tips for efficient packing.
NAPPIES | You can never have enough! To be safe pack one nappy for each hour you'll be in transit for newborn - 4 month olds and one every 2 hours for babies over 5 months. We use LITTLE ONE'S Nappies for value for money and reliability. Poppy consistently lasts all night with no leaks.
CHANGE MAT | I use one that holds a nappy and some wipes so you don’t need to carry the whole nappy bag in the change room - this is especially helpful when changing in the plane cubicle.
BLANKETS/SWADDLES | Bring a few. You'll use them to lay your baby on, cover your baby, cover yourself if you're nursing, protect your clothes from messy burps, as a pram canopy etc.
PLASTIC/DISPOSABLE BAGS | Carry a variety of sizes for storing soiled nappies, clothes, and blankets and of course nappies.
NAPPY RASH CREAMS & BABY BODY WASH | In small travel size.
WIPES | I use LITTLE ONE’S wipes simply because they are the best value. When you're a Germaphobe like me you will use A LOT of wipes. On everything. All the time.
HAND SANITISER | I use a natural essential oil spray and spray down the whole area on the plane/ bus /car.
DUMMIES! | And dummy chains if your babe leaves them on. We left with 8 and were down to ONE by our home flight - it was like juggling gold!
A FEW OF BABY'S TOYS | Maybe some new ones for older babies - surprise factor might encourage them to play with new toys a little longer.
CLOTHES, SOCKS, SHOES | One to two outfits per day is a good guideline. Don't forget the sun hat.
FEEDING UTENSILS, BIBS AND BABY FOOD | If your baby's eating solid foods.
FORMULA OR WATER, IF APPROPRIATE
EXTRA BOTTLES, NIPPLES, SIPPY CUP, IF APPROPRIATE
BREASTS | If like me you exclusively breastfeed, this is super easy ;)
HEALTHY SNACKS FOR YOU AS WELL AS OLDER BABIES
NIGHTLIGHT | Comes in handy to keep the room lighting soothingly low during middle-of-the-night nappy changes/ feeds
MEDICAL ESSENTIALS | Baby pain reliever and supplies for treating minor injuries. Poppy literally cut two teeth on the way over. Fun. Not.
VITAMINS FOR MAMA | Don't underestimate a good multi for a tired travelling mama.
ESSENTIAL OIL ROLLERS - BLENDS FOR OLDER BABIES | I had a calm/teeth blend & cough blend. Please note babies under 3 months shouldn't use essential oils - refer to guidelines for older babies.
SLING/ BABY CARRIER | LIFE saver! Poppy would only fall asleep in the carrier on the plane. Makes walking those aisles (and waiting around for the plane) much easier. And-hands-free!
CAR SEAT | If you buy a plane seat for your baby you can bring a carseat! I was super jealous of the lady opposite me who did just that and was able to watch movies and drink wine. I had a 10 kg seal flipping and flopping on my body and came off with what felt like a dislocated neck! Poppy was too big for the bassinet.
COLLAPSIBLE PRAM | You can check prams in at the gate. There are also travel strollers that fit in the overhead luggage compartments.
PACKING TIPS TO GET YOU ON YOUR WAY...
Start preparing to pack a few days before you travel. Keep a running list of things to take, or put items out on a table or dresser as you think of them.
Use a nappy bag with a waterproof lining and a shoulder strap.
Take an extra outfit or two for your baby – and an extra shirt for you – into your carry-on bag.
Prevent leaks by packing medicines and toiletries in resealable plastic bags.
Pack each of your baby's outfits in its own zipped plastic bag so you don't have to hunt around for tiny socks, shirts, and so on.
HAVE FUUUUUUN!! (Oh and don't pack with your baby in the same room!)
